There are many different variations when it comes to installing snow guards on your roof. Basic installations on a slate roof is on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th horizontal course, approximately 24" apart in a W pattern.
First is ice dam formation. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas. How snow guards can help prevent ice dams is by causing the snow to freeze around the snow guard which allows the ice build-up in the gutter to start melting.
Second is the eave and gutter system. That much weight and force can have a crippling effect on them, leaving them inoperable. Properly installed snow guards will break up or even stop avalanching snow long before it reaches the eave.
Finally, any object under the eaves, such as landscaping or vehicles, can become severely damaged by falling snow and ice.
